market research technology in virtual worlds
in spring 2006 I started experimenting with linking GMI's existing web survey software to the virtual world of Second Life. objects inside Second Life can be programmed to respond to what avatars do and say, and surveys set up through GMI's survey software can be delivered inside Second Life through chat or dialog features. in addition, survey objects can automatically and directly pay respondents on completion of a survey, making for a highly automated process.
with the open-sourcing of the Second Life viewer early in 2007, I've created a modified version that turns the viewer into an interviewing tool, enabling the running of surveys through a semi-human, semi-automated avatar, in a sense a virtual version of the intercept-type face-to-face survey. to the left here you see my latest prototype, an avatar bot that logs into Second Life, and being linked to our Net-MR survey backend, can ask passers-by survey questions. "Belle Isbell" is usually sitting outside my main place, so please feel free to visit her in Second Life and talk to her to try out the simple demo survey! to really experience yourself what I'm talking about here, you are very welcome to visit my survey innovation island here (direct teleport via SLurl), so please stop by and take a look at the survey prototypes there. I'm "Mario Sonic" in Second Life, feel free to IM me in-world if you'd like to discuss anything around these ideas! |
